When a charity has the backing of a celebrity, chances are it will get noticed. There are many celebrities who lend their time, money and efforts to various causes. Drew Barrymore is no exception. She lends her support to two such charities, the Wildlife Waystation and the Female Health Foundation.

Wildlife Waystation: Founded in 1975, the Wildlife Waystation is a non-profit animal sanctuary spread across 160 acres in California’s Angeles National Forest. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, relocate, and provide sanctuary to wild and exotic animals. They also aim to educate the public on animal issues. Since its onset, the charity has sheltered and cared for over 75,000 animals including large cats, primates, bears, reptiles and birds.

Female Health Foundation: The Female Health Foundation was established in 1996 in the United States as a not-for-profit organization which dedicates itself to improving sexual, reproductive and family health. Their goal is to heighten women’s awareness on health issues and developing programs that serve women and their families around the world.

At the moment, the Female Health Foundation’s primary focus in 2004 is not to fund research, but rather to develop information, education, communication, and outreach programs that center on giving power to women to make smart reproductive health choices.

The Female Health Company is the maker of FC Female Condom, a female-initiated barrier method of contraception and disease prevention. This product provides men and women an additional choice of protection from both unintended pregnancy and the transmission of sexual diseases.

Many studies have been conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) to determine the efficacy of the female condom and its use.
